The bountiful gift of guided meditation.

October 24, 2011© Ambika Devi

Turn your focus inward. Introspection allows us to ponder the more profound aspects of life. This desire to contemplate life creates an ability to withdraw the senses from the seen world transporting us to the inner workings of spirit. Time spent in reflection nourishes the soul. If thoughts about life begin to overwhelm the emotions, a tool which helps to train the mind is integrative relaxation though guided meditation. Guided meditation helps to develop the ability to focus attention of the mind as body completely relaxes. During guided meditation, the listener receives meaningful insights.

Exploring the inner recesses of the soul through guided meditation help us gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. Thoughts so easily cloud the mind and carry us away from our focus. This makes reflection a potential source of frustration. As we allow ourselves to be guided through meditation, we find a way to engage in a type of contemplation that focuses our attention. Allowing ourselves to be guided gives us the opportunity to give over to the divine influence and guidance. When we are in a state of relaxed effortlessness, insights come to us that we find ease in embracing. Engaging in guided meditation brings amazing revelations.

I am here to guide you. Contact me to arrange your session.

"Yoga is a science and philosophy of life that gets us out of our minds and into the cosmic ocean of oneness where intuition leads.

A body, mind and spirit in harmony makes good choices that promote well-being."

Vak-Yoga May 12, 2013            Ambika Devi MA Yoga-NEXT Movement: Educator

Vak Yoga: is the journey from My Word to I am Word. It is the Yoga of the speech process. Vak is the progression of thought becoming a Spoken Expression.  Vak is the procedure by which the Birth of Speech takes place through the speaker.

Stress has been created through our speech patterns. Let us now generate and regenerate positive energy with our sounds.

We have learned how to spend energy by speaking. Let’s now energize ourselves by speaking.

In Vak Yoga we are dealing with the living being and not viewing the body as a machine.  The west has immersed in the act of working the physical body  and the breath in many forms of exercise. Now it is ready to learn the art of meditation.

When breathing alone is not enough to create deep relaxation, Vak Yoga combines breath with sounds to quickly and easily take us into the deep integrative felt state of meditation.

As Yoga-NEXT educators, we work with the voice and breath in harmony.

Our theorem for Vak Yoga comes from the Patanjali Yoga sutras: 2:27 and 4:1.

The experience of a Vak-Yoga practice allows participants to feel and compare the difference between these three states:

1. Physical relation is experienced through Yoga asana movement of the body which occurs in the final resting pose of Yoga: Shavasana, after the body has exercised.

2. The conscious sleep of Yoga Nidra.

3. Deep relaxation in a waking state in our unique sound-breath technique of Vak-Yoga meditation.

As your instructor I give guidance for the precision of sound by making adjustments and corrections of technique. This gives the optimum experience of the mind stilling effect of Vak-Yoga. It cannot be achieved by listening to a recording.

The outcome and effect of Vak-Yoga is the full-bodily-felt-sensation of being in the moment and completely connected with others and the world around you.

The gifts of the practice of Vak Yoga

Vak-Yoga Gives: Peace of mind and opens the path to self-realization.

Vak-Yoga Deconstructs: methods and beliefs and past patterns.

Vak-Yoga creates Acceptance, understanding and empathy for self and others.

This is the new life of yoga. This is Vak, this is Yoga-NEXT.

Vak-Yoga Meditation,

The journey from My Word to I am Word.

Vak-Yoga is the Yoga of  Divine Sound and cosmic vibration. Vak-Yoga is the progression of thought becoming a Spoken Expression. We have learned how to spend energy by speaking. Let’s now energize ourselves with the sound of our speech. As a Yoga-NEXT educator, Ambika Devi teaches you to use the voice and breath in harmony, guiding you to a state of deep relaxation in a waking consciousness, the deep-trance state of meditation. As your instructor Ambika Devi MA gives guidance for the precision of sound by making adjustments and corrections to subtly tune your voice as an instrument of Divine creation. This gives the optimum experience of the mind stilling effect of Vak-Yoga. This ancient mystery teaching Is the expressed property of Dr. B.V.K Sastry and Yoga Samskrutham-University to whom Ambika Devi is appointed assistant and presenter. These techniques must be taught live and follow the unique doctrine of Gurukula. Vak-Yoga teachings cannot be duplicated by listening to a recording. The outcome and effect of Vak-Yoga is the full-bodily-felt-sensation of being in the moment and completely connected with others and the world around you.

It is not possible to homogenize a particular movement that can be a cure all for everyone. There are three distinct body/mind/spirit types with 9 subcategories.  Also affecting a given choice is the environment and the stress level for an individual. Therefore it is not possible to homogenize the choices as far as what is the best practice for everyone all at once. Each individual is a unique organism and an integral part of the greater. In order to help a person make good choices different factors must be considered.

There are postures in Yoga Asana that indeed provide specific benefits to the organs, systems and parts of the body. Given a particular body type and the state of the individual, modifications may be necessary. The main reason to practice any form of Yoga posture is to become loose in the joints so the practitioner can meditate.

Yoga is for the Mind. Ayurveda is for the Body. Jyotish is for the Spirit. These are three daughters of the Vedas that dance in harmony to inspire for wholeness, happiness and health for us. Therefore, I suggest the main reason to do any Yoga posture is to make space in the body in order to meditate. In a meditative state the body rights itself." ~Ambika Devi MA July 15, 2014

In 2013 I published my novel Lilith in which the lead character reads Tarot, meditates and learns the wisdom of the Vedas through the teachings of natures spirits. My new book Unfolding Happiness brings you thoughts on happiness, health and Ayurveda. I convey the ancient Yoga teachings with  humor and love in my Yoga Wisdom blog. Discover my books here.

Breathing life into your day!

September 23, 2009 Ambika Devi
If you have ventured into my Yoga class then you have heard me talk in numerous ways about the importance of your breath. My philosophy is that the breath transports us through our practice of yoga as it does through our lives. It is obvious that the act of breathing is essential for living.

The ancient ones teach us to practice our breathing and to perfect it. It is believed that we are given a stock of a set amount of breaths to use in our lifetime. By practicing the lengthening of each breath we are lengthening our lives.

We yogis learn to control the breath, to savor the breath and to allow the breath to carry us through our Yoga practice and through our lives! There are many exercises to strengthen and relax the breath. During a Yoga practice, whether rigorous or gentle, the most used style of breathing is the Ujjayi breath. Learn how to perform this soothing and empowering breath.

Ujjayi Pranayama, The art of breathing like the waves of the ocean.
Ujjayi pranayama is the Yogic exercise of mimicking the oceanic sound or the sound of the waves. To practice Pranayama is to focus on the breath to increase energy in the body.

Ujjayi is the primary breath of a Yoga practice. It is simple to achieve. Give it a try by sitting in a comfortable position. Begin to inhale and exhale deeply using your mouth. While doing this, constrict your throat as if something is choking it when you exhale and inhale the air. This will produce a sound similar to the ocean when you breath.

Next, close your mouth and breathe using your nose. Maintain the same tone within your throat, so that your breath continues to make the same sound as you did when your mouth was open.

Ujjayi means "victory" in Sanskrit. This is the breath of being victorious! The practice of Ujjayi warms the breath as it enters the lungs, helping to build heat in the body so that stretching is safer and the inner organs can be cleansed of any toxins that have accumulated. Through this heat, the internal agni or ‘fire' is stoked, and a powerful healing process is unlocked.

In the beginning try to practice the breath for three to five minutes. Over time increase to the length of your Yoga practice.
Namaste-Ambika Devi
